Political Parties’ Manifestoes: A Comparative Analysis of Political and Socio-Economic Programmes in Pakistan in 1970 Elections

This study examines the election manifestoes and political programmes of major political parties in Pakistan. It focuses on their proposed constitutional, political, economic, social, educational, and foreign policy reforms. The text discusses the manifestoes of the Pakistan People’s Party, Awami League, different factions of the Muslim League, National Awami Party, Pakistan Democratic Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, and Jamiat-ulUlema-e-Islam. The study explores how these parties proposed to address issues such as provincial autonomy, federalism, economic inequality, land reforms, workers’ rights, education, and the distribution of resources between East and West Pakistan. It also examines their differing views on nationalisation, the role of Islam in governance, constitutional arrangements, and foreign policy. The analysis highlights both shared objectives and differences in the proposed methods of achieving political and socio-economic change. Using a qualitative documentary approach, the study analyses the available manifesto statements thematically. It aims to understand how political parties presented their visions for Pakistan and how their programmes reflected the political and economic concerns of the period. The study is limited to the manifesto material provided and does not independently assess the implementation or electoral impact of these proposals.
